Welcome to Evergreen

You’ll probably want to do some exploring, as this may be your first trip to this part of the world. The old town of Evergreen, around the junction of Hwy 74 and Hwy 73, is fun to walk around.  There are lots of shops and restaurants of various vintages, and the newly refurbished Evergreen hotel (photo op) next to the Little Bear is a wonderful place to stop for a latte or a martini. Take a peek inside the Bear – www.littlebearsaloon.com - or check out their nightly entertainment.

There are some exciting things to see close by…Red Rocks (photo op) is a large, natural stone amphitheatre east of Evergreen off of Hwy 74.  It’s a stunning geologic wonder, and the drive down Bear Creek Canyon (photo op) is worth the trip alone.

A little south of Morrison is The Fort restaurant – www.thefort.com - (photo op), a replica of a real fort that used to be in Southern Colorado.  The menu features food and drink from the Old West as well as contemporary items.  It’s a memorable adventure in dining.

There’s limited stakes gambling in two old mining towns, Central City (see the famous Face on the Bar Room Floor) – www.centralcitycolorado.net – and Blackhawk – www.cityofblackhawk.org.  Blackhawk has more casinos but Central City, just a hop, skip and a jump up the road, still has all of the old buildings.  Looks just like it did more than a hundred years ago when it was in the middle of the “Richest Square Mile on Earth.”  (Gold in them thar hills!)  It’s a really pretty drive to these historic places, too (photo op) - mountains, canyons and rivers.

To get there, take Hwy 74 north from Evergreen, turn left on CO 65 at Bergen Park.  It will take you to I-70.  Stay on the frontage road all the way to the bottom of the HILL.  Turn right onto Hwy 6 and then left onto Hwy 119.  “Little Vegas” is not far up the road.  It’ll take you about 45 minutes or less to get there from Evergreen.

For dining variety there are some special places to eat in the area besides The Fort -   Keys on the Green, upstream from the lake on Upper Bear Creek Road (great old log building next to the golf course), The Tivoli Deer (5-star) in Kittredge – www.tivolideer.com - and El Rancho – www.historicelrancho.com -  near the 252 Exit.  There are several restaurants on Main Street in Evergreen and some fast food ones north of the lake on the west side of Hwy 74, along with a drug/liquor store and a Safeway market.

Have fun!  Remember, training starts at 9!
