I came to San Francisco as a journeyman mailer in January of 1979.  As I learned the ropes in San Francisco, I started working on different jobs in the mailroom.  I learned the console (the delivery systems that we used in the different plants), I was an assistant supervisor, and I also learned the technician job for the stackers and tyers. I worked in all departments of the mailroom and tried to learn as much as possible about how everything worked. We had a galley room there that did circulation work and I also worked in there.

When Fred Dal Broi came to San Francisco as VP of production, he asked the mailroom manager if there were any personnel that they could use in management.  I was recommended and offered a management position (operations manager) on a trail bases for a year, after which time I had to decide if I wanted to leave the union and be a part on management.  I enjoyed the position and accepted it after the trail period.

I was then offered the assistant manager position and accepted it.  We set up teams to recommend what equipment we were going to buy for the new warehouse and inserting operation.  I served as a team leader on two of those teams.  When we were evaluating new packaging software, I was invited to be a part of the demonstrations.  We made the decision go with BURT and I was involved in the implementation.  I became the packaging center’s Burt go-to person for the implementation.  I worked the Paul Maynes in IT on the BURT and LineManager successful installs.  I then trained the personal in receiving and the other managers that were going to be using Burt.  I also learned how to create reports using Crystal Reports accessing data from the Burt database and we used those reports for tracking and archiving.  I also created an access database for posting schedules for the packaging center employees.  I sought employment with BURT and accepted the offer to work at Burt Technologies and started in July 2007.
